Although Paul Slegers from Crafted by Infinity would probably disagree with the idea of a rare fancy vivid blue, faceted diamond being unearthed in this unlikely manner, the video provided from Sotheby’s to unveil The Blue Moon Diamond is pretty cool if you ask me!
Weighing in at a whopping 12.03 carats, this fancy vivid blue cushion cut diamond is an extraordinary and exquisite diamond which is headed for the auction block in November. The Blue Moon Diamond will be featured as part of the Magnificent and Noble Jewels collection.
The estimated auction price for the Blue Moon Diamond is estimated to be between $35,000,000 – 55,000,000 USD. This might seem like a staggering number if you’re more accustomed to the price of white diamonds, however fancy vivid blue diamonds are extremely rare. It is estimated that only one in every ten thousand diamonds is a fancy color diamond, and even fewer of those exhibit such intensity of color.
Fancy blue color diamonds are believed to be blue in color due to chemical boron being present while the diamond crystal is being formed, along with other impurities in the diamond crystal. These properties bond with the carbon crystal structure, and absorb the colors red, yellow, and green from the color spectrum, thereby creating the color blue for us to enjoy.
You might wonder why we don’t feature diamonds such as this at High Performance Diamonds, the reality is that even though we have access to rare diamonds such as this, they tend to be sold through very specific sales channels, and are rarely featured online publicly. However we have connections to a number of specialists and could deliver rare diamonds such as this if you’re ever in the market.
