A walk down memory lane, jewelry treasures from the past

Van Cleef Arpel broach, photo courtesy of Sotheby's auctionA little bird told me that there is a splendid auction occurring at Sotheby’s right now, it features important jewels. This beautiful bird broach adorned with diamonds and colored gems sings a wonderful little song, it just sold for a whopping $43,750.00 U.S. which is well beyond the estimated sale price of 7-10k. The broach is part of the Estee Lauder collection, and the proceeds go to benefit the Alzheimers Drug Discovery Foundation.

The Important Jewels Auction at Sotheby’s is inspired by New York Fashion Week, and features colorful pieces designed by industry legends, such as Bulgari, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Jean Schlumberger. Highlights of the auction are from the private collections of influential women such as Estee Lauder, Mrs. Spelman Prentice, and Mamie Doud Eisenhower.

These fantastic gems originate from the nineteenth century, all the way up until more recent times. I don’t know about you, but I just love this type of jewelry, which tells a story, and marks a transformation in time, this bird is designed so well, that it looks real.

Whether you are a private collector of fine jewelry, or simply appreciate the craftsmanship and creativity that goes into making jewelry like this, which is essentially art to a person like myself who is terminally infected with the jewelry bug, you owe it to yourself to spend at least a few minutes today browsing the catalogue for the Sotheby’s Important Jewels auction. Go ahead, grab a fresh cup of coffee, and get lost in the dream for awhile…
